Another Friday. Another stack of emails I'm behind on. I told myself I'd get this post up by 9am. It's almost noon. My coffee went cold twice. I dropped a hoodie on the floor and left it there.
But I looked at everything. Four pieces worth talking about. Two of them surprised me. One made me laugh for the wrong reasons.
Let's go.

1. Marmot PreCip Light Jacket – $99 (Surprising Gem)
I don't talk about outdoor brands much. Not really my thing. But this sample showed up in a box marked "please look" and I almost ignored it. Glad I didn't.
It's a rain jacket that doesn't sound like a trash bag when you move. Super thin. Packs into its own pocket. The fit is boxy but in a good way—room for a hoodie underneath. I wore it on a foggy morning walk to the shop. Stayed dry. Didn't overheat.
The surprise? The zipper pulls are easy to grab with cold hands. Small thing. But someone thought about it.
One problem: the colors are bad. Bright yellow. Bright red. Who wants that? Get the black or the dark gray. Buy.
2. Nike Dri-FIT ADV Long Sleeve – $65 (Hard Skip)
I wanted to like this. Nike tech usually works. But this thing is a mess.
The fabric is thin in the wrong places. Armpits especially. I raised my arms in the stockroom and felt a draft. Not ripped. Just… see-through. For $65, that's embarrassing.
Also the fit is long. Like weird long. The sleeves cover half my thumb. The hem hits below my belt. I'm 5'11 and it made me look shorter. How does that happen?
Sophie said it looked like I borrowed a shirt from someone taller. She wasn't wrong.
Skip. Hard skip.
3. New Balance 990v6 Tan – $185 (Surprising Gem)
I don't usually get excited about 990s anymore. They're good. We know they're good. But this tan colorway is different.
It's not grey. Not brown. Somewhere in between. Works with black jeans, olive cargos, even washed-out light wash denim. I tried all three.
The v6 has more foam than the v5. Bouncier. I walked four miles in these without thinking about my feet once. That's rare for a sneaker that still looks like a dad shoe.
Downside? The tongue shifts sideways when you walk. Not a dealbreaker. Just annoying. I have to fix it every few hours.
Still. Buy.
4. Uniqlo Wide Sweatpant (new season) – $50
Not a gem. Not a skip. Just solid.
These are looser than the normal Uniqlo sweats. Not baggy. Just… wide. Like a straight leg but soft. The waistband is thick and holds up. I've had last season's pair for eight months. No sagging.
The new colors are good. Dark brown. Olive. A grey that's actually warm, not that cold blue-grey everyone uses.
Only thing: size down if you're between sizes. I'm a medium and got a small. Fits perfect. If you get your normal size, they'll slide down your hips.
I bought the olive pair for myself. Already wore them twice. Buy.
One more thing I forgot.
The Marmot jacket? I wore it in a light rain last Tuesday. Stayed dry. Then I hung it on a hook and forgot about it. When I came back, there was a small puddle on the floor. The hood collects water and drips slowly for like an hour after you take it off.
Not a huge deal. But if you hang it over something you care about, you'll be annoyed. I learned that the hard way. My notebook has a wet corner now.
So that's the week. Two buys: Marmot jacket (black), New Balance 990v6 tan. One solid: Uniqlo sweats (size down). One hard no: Nike long sleeve.
Next Friday I'll try to post before noon. No promises. I still have that hoodie on the floor.
