The $25 Amazon Athletic Short That Outperforms $80 Brands

I bought a pair of $25 Amazon shorts because I forgot to pack gym stuff before a trip. Turns out they're better than most $80 brands I've tried. Here's how that happened.

I didn't want to like these. That's the honest truth.

I was heading to San Diego for the weekend. Sophie packed for both of us because I was running late. She forgot my gym shorts. Not her fault. I should have checked.

So Friday night I'm in a hotel room, scrolling Amazon on my phone, mad at myself. I just needed something to wear for a run the next morning. Something cheap. Something I wouldn't care about.

I picked the first pair that had decent reviews and could arrive at the hotel by 10 AM. Some brand I'd never heard of. $24.99. Free shipping.

They showed up in a plastic bag. No box. No fancy tissue paper. Just shorts.

First impression was bad.

The material felt thin. Not cheap-thin. Just lighter than I expected. I held them up to the window and could see light through the fabric. I almost sent them back. But the hotel front desk guy said returns would be a hassle, so I kept them.

I wore them for a six-mile run the next morning along the bay. Cool air. A little wind.

They were fine. Not great. Fine.

But here's where it gets weird.

Three months later, I wear them more than my Lululemon.

The fabric broke in after two washes. That light, see-through feeling went away. Now it's soft but still dries fast. I've worn them for runs, gym sessions, and sitting on my couch eating takeout. They don't pill where my thighs rub together. The Lululemon shorts I paid $78 for? Pilling after two months.

The waistband is elastic with a drawstring that actually works. Not one of those fake drawstrings that's sewn in at the back. You can pull it tight and it stays. The pockets are deep. I put my phone in the right pocket and ran the whole six miles. Didn't bounce. Didn't fall out.

The liner inside is mesh. Not the nice soft liner you get in expensive running shorts. Just basic mesh. But it doesn't ride up. I forgot about it after five minutes. That's all I need.

Two things that annoy me.

The stitching near the left pocket came loose after month two. Just a few threads. I sniped them off with scissors. No hole yet. But I keep checking. It'll probably rip eventually. For $25, I'll live.

The colors they list online aren't accurate. I ordered "dark olive" and got something closer to gray-green. Not ugly. Just not what I clicked on. Read the reviews before you buy. Someone in the reviews probably posted a real photo.

The $80 brands I compared them to.

I have Lululemon Pace Breakers. Good shorts. Comfortable. But the waistband stretched out after a year. And the liner got loose. They're sitting in my drawer right now. I still wear them sometimes. Not my first choice anymore.

I have Nike Dri-FIT running shorts. Paid $65. The fabric is thicker than the Amazon pair. But the pockets are shallow. My phone half-hangs out. I don't trust them for a real run.

I have Ten Thousand shorts. $78. Great for heavy lifting. Too stiff for running. The Amazon pair does both okay.

Would I buy them again?

Yeah. I already ordered a second pair. Black this time. They came in two days. The black is actually black. No weird color issues.

Will they last a year? I don't know. The loose thread worries me. But I've washed the first pair maybe fifteen times now. Still no holes. Still fits the same.

For $25, I don't need them to last forever. I need them to work when I grab them at 6 AM. And they do.

One thing I forgot.

The tag inside is huge. Like, comically huge. Seam ripper big. I cut mine out after the first wash. Sophie asked why there were tiny white threads all over the bathroom floor. I didn't have a good answer.

That's the real review. Cheap shorts that beat expensive ones. Doesn't happen often. This time it did.
